UGC scholarships for women postgraduates
Post-Graduate Indira Gandhi scholarship for single girl child is introduced by the University Grants Commission (UGC) to provide financial support for families having a single girl child to pursue the girl child’s higher education.
Many women belonging to small families are usually ending up their dreams of pursuing higher education due to lack of financial support and affordability from their families. To support women come out from such problems and to help them realize their dreams of higher education, the central government Human Resource Development Ministry has made certain suggestions to the UGC to provide scholarship grants for women to provide the financial support. The “UGC scholarships for women postgraduates” is one such program.
This scholarship is introduced by UGC in the academic year of 2005-06. If the parents have a single girl child joining in any non professional post graduate course is eligible to get this financial support which is the main aim of this scholarship program. This program is mainly designed to improve women education in underprivileged small families.
Eligibility criteria for this UGC scholarship
The girl has to be a single child to the parents and has already joined in the first year of a PG course in a UGC recognized university. She should not be more than 30 years of age to benefit from this scholarship program.
Those who are pursuing PG courses in distance education are not eligible to apply for this scholarship program. Families having a son along with their daughter are not considered for this scholarship program.

Amount paid under scholarship
The eligible women postgraduates are given a scholarship of Rs 2,000 per month. This scholarship is granted till the two years PG course is completed considering 10 months per year to pay the amount. One is also eligible to get scholarships from other organizations along with this program.
UGC Scholarship selection procedure
All applications are scrutinized by the technical committee and shortlist those eligible for the program. The university/college/institute should certify that the student is pursuing PG course in their institution. They should also give a utilization certificate and progress report of the student that the scholarship is put to better use for education to the UGC to release the second years scholarship amount. Moreover the concerned university/ college/ institution have to certify that the student has done her postgraduate course under this scholarship program to the concerned authorities.
Discontinuing education …
Those who would like to discontinue their PG course studying under this scholarship should inform the college management who should immediately bring it to the notice of the UGC. If the student discontinues without any intimation to the college she is responsible to pay back the scholarship amount that has been taken till then to the UGC in the form of DD.
Those who have not been able to get 60% marks in their first year of the PG course (physically disabled 55%), else found mismanaging the amount granted to the student, the scholarship program provided to them shall be totally cancelled. The student has to show specific academic qualifications to continue in the scholarship program for the two years.
Application for scholarship
One has to fill in the online application form as directed by the UGC. The documents to be attached are:
Admission certificate by the respective college management that the student has enrolled in their Post graduate course.
10th certificate indicating the student’s age and education.
Ration card copy along with the student’s signature.
An affidavit with the student’s total details on Rs 50/- stamp paper that is attested with a signature by a Tahasildar/ Gazetted officer/ first class magistrate has to be submitted.
Eligible candidates should send their online applications within 30 days of the scholarship notice.
Printout applications will not be entertained.
