Pharmacy is one among the rapidly growing sectors in the country. With the regular demand for medicines the pharmacy sector is gradually expanding. In fact India is well ahead than many other Asian countries in starting new companies, bulk drug production, drug development and formulation of new drugs. There are courses like D. pharmacy, Pharma D, B. Pharmacy, M. Pharmacy for one to find a career in pharmacy sector. By doing these courses one can easily find jobs in the pharmacy industry. Let us check out the details of various courses in Pharmacy.

Diploma in pharmacy (D. Pharmacy)

This is a two year duration course and the eligibility criteria are intermediate with MPC or BiPC. Both government and private sector there are almost 62 institutes in Andhra Pradesh state offering this course. Admissions are based on the intermediate marks.

Bachelor of pharmacy (B. Pharmacy):

This course duration is 4 years and the eligibility criteria to join in this course are intermediate MPC or BiPC or D Pharmacy diploma. In our state in both government and private sectors almost 290 institutes are offering this course. There are almost 25 thousand seats available in these institutes. Based on the rank of EAMCET, 50% of the seats are filled with MPC candidates and 50% seats are filled with the BiPC candidates.

Doctor of pharmacy (Pharma. D):

For professional education in pharmacy, the pharmacy council of India has introduced this versatile course doctor of pharmacy (Pharma.D). Eligibility for this course is intermediate with either MPC or BiPC. The course duration is 6 years and in our state there are 23 colleges offering this Phama. D course. There are 690 seats in this course which are filled based on the EAMCET ranks.

Bachelor of pharmacy (B.Pharmacy) students can also join in the doctor of pharmacy course. For this they have to write post graduate engineering common entrance test (PGESET). For them the course duration is for 3 years. In this manner there are 70 seats available across our state.

Master of Pharmacy (M.Pharmacy):

After B.Pharmacy one can pursue their higher education by joining in M.Pharmacy. There are different specializations available in this course. The duration of the course is two years. Across the state there are 100 colleges offering this course. There are almost 4000 seats in these colleges and the admissions are done through the score one gets in M.Pharmacy course PGESET or graduate pharmacy aptitude test (GPAT).


BITS, Niper, Manipal universities of pharmacy are offering PhD courses with various specializations. For more details one can visit the websites of those universities.

Job Opportunities in Pharmacy Sector:

Pharmacy candidates can start their own pharmacies and become self employed entrepreneurs. For the D pharmacy / B.Pharmacy candidates there are jobs in the drug manufacturing organizations as analysts, quality assistants, lab assistants etc in the beginning of their career and as assistant manager, supervisor jobs in the middle management level. However by doing higher education in the pharmacy sector one can also grow to higher ranks in the industry. By doing M.Pharmacy /PhD courses one can find top management jobs as well as participate in the research works. They can also settle down in the education sector as lecturers and professors. In the government organizations the diploma candidates are appointed as pharmacists. Candidates who have done B.Pharmacy, M.Pharmacy courses are eligible for the drug inspector posts.

There are very good opportunities for pharmacy candidates in abroad. However to practice as pharmacists over there one should qualify the exams conducted over there. Regulations are also going to come that pharmacy D candidates should be appointed in the hospital dispensaries. Along with this course by joining in clinical research “SAAS” and also by training in other software course one can find many new opportunities. Not only in the hospitals but also they can find offers in clinical research organizations, drug development, clinical trials and clinical pharmacy sectors. Moreover by doing this course one will also become eligible to attend the North American pharmacist licenser examination (NAPLEX) required for the pharmacy jobs in America.

GPAT for pharmacy PG courses:

Graduate pharmacy aptitude test (GPAT) is an examination that allows one to join in various institutes/universities offering master of pharmacy (M.Pharmacy) courses. By getting a good rank in this entrance test one can get admissions national institute of pharmacy education and research (Niper), central university and also in the 100’s of traditional universities across the country.

Management courses in pharmacy:

It is important to know the marketing strategies to sell the drugs in the market. By keeping this requirement in view various educational organizations are offering management courses in the pharmacy sector. By doing this course one can find in pharmaceuticals, chemical, biotechnology organizations, research and also in education institutes the managerial designation jobs.

National institute of pharmaceutical education and research, Punjab- is offering MBA (pharma) course. B. Pharmacy candidates are eligible for this course.

Narsimonji institute of management studies, Mumbai- is offering MBA (pharmaceutical management) course. B. Pharmacy candidates are eligible for this course.

Indian institute of pharmaceutical marketing, Lucknow- is offering PG diploma in business administration (pharmacy marketing) in the self study mode. Any graduates are eligible for this course.

Central level institutes:
Birla institute of technology and sciences (BITS): Philani (Rajasthan), Hyderabad campus: B.Pharmacy (Honors), M.Pharmacy courses are offered.

National institute of pharmacy education and research (Niper):
There are campuses for this institute across the country ( Mohali, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Guwhati, Ahmadabad, Raibarely,  Hagipur). These are offering MSc (pharmacy) courses in pharmacy. Niper-admission is offered based on the common entrance test/GPAT score.
Manipal University: Manipal College of pharmaceutical sciences is offering courses in B.Pharmacy, M.Pharmacy, D pharmacy and in pharmacy-D.
